    Children

Children today are barraged by more messages, more demands on their attention, and more instant gratification than any other generation in the history of the planet. It is little wonder that they are suffering from anxiety, stress, “attention deficit disorder” and a large variety of other dignoses.

Kids are also faced with issues of shyness, anxiety, playground bullying, peer pressure, drugs and alcohol, learning about sex...  the list can get quite long.

Along with what happens outside the family is what happens inside. Many families are struggling with the separation and distance that is caused by both parents needing to work, busy schedules, TV, mp3 players, portable computer games, portable video players and a host of items that detract from family connection.

All children need to have a secure “attachment” with an adult who cares for them. When this attachment is constantly interrupted or broken, then kids begin to retreat into themselves. They may become angry, detached, or antisocial. They may become anxious, worried, or hyperactive. They may develop learning problems or act out in class.

On-line counseling can help parents to learn how to help their kids. It can also provide kids with a safe person, outside of the family, with whom they can share their feelings and learn new skills for dealing with the stresses that they face.

My years as an on-line educator and as a school counselor have shown me that kids react well to on-line connections - and that simply making a connection with someone can often make a big difference.
