    Depression

Depression is the “illness of our times”, and Canadians spent approximately $1.2 billion on antidepressants in 2005 (up from $543 million in 2000). Depression causes life to be viewed through a damp gray filter that hides the beauty and excitement of the world. Depression does not have to be forever, and counseling has been shown by many studies to be an effective method of recovery.

There are many factors that can contribute to depression including:

    • Cultural - expectations, pressures
    • Relational - desires, expectations
    • Chemical/Hormonal - imbalances
    • Physical - diet, exercise, living conditions
    • Mental - Attitude, outlook
    • Emotional - self awareness, habits, emotional comfort zone
    • Historical - life experience, personal history
    • Familial - family relational history
    • Medical - medication as a treatment option

It is important to look at all of the factors and to work from many directions, but sorting out which ones can seem overwhelming. Talking to a counselor can help you to sort out the causes of your discomfort so that you can focus your energy in the most useful ways.
